Resistance is a strange series, as just about every game is entirely different than the previous, thus getting mixed results from fans but surprisingly good reviews from major publications. I was a little hesitant on this installment with the lack of Nathan Hale (the main protagonist form the other two games) being replaced by a side character from the second game, but I will be the first to say the switch is definitely a good thing.

Joe Capelli is the main character this time around and he has carved as humble of a life as one can in the ever depressing times of the Resistance series, he now has a wife and a small child and lives in a human settlement in a small town doing what they can to stay out of the Chimaera’s way. Joe’s child is sick and with out proper medicine is future looks dark so when asked by Dr. Fyodor Malikov to accompany him to New York and take down a Chimaera tower he is reluctant but his wife convinces him that the risk is worth the reward and Joe sets off on a awesome journey.

Let me just say that the non-regenerating health is certainly welcomed and adds to the over all experience greatly. The shooting is great, as was expected, and the weapons are even better. The old favorites are there, as with a few welcomed new additions, and the ability to up grade them based off how often they are used adds some great new features and is highly addictive. There is even a level very reminiscent of RavenHolm from Half Life 2 and a prison sequences that really sold me on the game as a whole. The only negative is none of it is really all that difficult until the very end when you find yourself drowning in Chimaera and that’s when the fun really begins. As a added bonus if you have the ability, the Playstation Move Sharpshooter is also able to be used instead of your controller and after a few trys it really starts to give you a new appreciation for both the game and the Move controller.

This is the only subject the game is lacking in, they are not bad but sub-par especially for a PS3 exclusive but the environments never get dull and are constantly changing odds are your favorite battle ground in in this game. The level designs towards the end of the game are truly great and add a feeling of terror not felt in the other games. The Chimaera look extremely gross and evil, just about every alien type is better looking and more well designed than ever. Capelli is not longer bald but you can defintely still tell its the same guy from Resistance 2.

There are unlock-able skins and different game mods to get with points gained throughout the Campaign but I was let down that there is no Nathan Hale skin, maybe that will be available on the PSN in the future. The online is great too just like the previous installments and will provide hours of entertainment as well.

Resistance has a great feel of bleak hopelessness not often felt in video games but can be found in movies like The Road, it does have its flaws and much like the other games and frankly my biggest complaint with the entire series is that you can hardly tell its in the 1950′s sometimes (there’s no M1 Garand!!). But in the end the game has great features from games of the past like non-regenerating health and couch Co-Op, and the added online game makes Resistance 3 hands down the best in the series. Any PS3 owner or just fan of shooters should check this out.
