I love MP in my shooter. SP should be a must in any shooter and thus in my opinion developers are not watering down their SP to make a good MP. MP is just a bonus. Killzone 2 SP may not have a good story, but that is not because Gorilla Game put all they got in the MP part and screw up the SP story. Maybe, even if the MP did not turn out too good in Killzone 2 we would still have a so-so SP. Developers are not going to sacrafice a good SP franchise so they can have a killer MP for their shooter.
