The dictionary defines Natal as being a relation to birth. I guess that Project Natal is supposed to represent the birth of a new era of gaming. Unfortunately, Project Natal is more of a birth defect than it is a step into the next generation.
This generation of consoles has been one heck of a roller-coaster ride for all gamers, although a little bumpier for PlayStation 3 crowd. Although Sony has been making progress it has definitely been suffering from some bad press – very bad press. Sony may seem unfazed by recent threats and remarks made by third party contributors but to some it appears that Sony’s confidence is nothing more than the sound of the soothing string quartet that is intended to calm the remaining passengers on board the Titanic console while it slowly sinks. The truth is the further we move into the future the faster technology evolves. Sony released the first PlayStation in 1995, followed by the PlayStation 2 in 2000, and then finally the PlayStation 3 in 2006. There seems to be a five year interval between the release of each console. We are now half way through 2009, which means we are more than half way through this generation’s console lifespan – that is if Sony don’t break the pattern, and if the PlayStation 3 well and truly is sinking it would make a lot of sense for Sony to be working on the next big thing.
It is highly speculated both among gamers and industry professionals that the next lot of consoles should surface around 2012. One nutter at Microsoft (some may call him “the CEO”) has even gone so far as to shoving his foot in his mouth by announcing a new Xbox console for 2010. The publicity that comment got certainly did not bode well for Microsoft. Even before the announcement of Project Natal rumors started surfacing that the next Xbox console would feature a motion capture device that would render hand held controllers obsolete. The recent announcement of Project Natal and the slight slip of tongue from Ballmer makes this whole Project Natal business smell of something suspicious.

Okay, cutting to the chase. Project Natal will probably launch somewhere between $99 to $199, and that is being optimistic considering the prices of rather simple peripherals, possibly the later half of 2010. This would bring the entire value of the Xbox 360 above the PlayStation 3, and Sony have been copping hell for the current price tag of the PlayStation 3. All things are pointing towards Sony working on the PlayStation 4. Project Natal will do nothing but throw Microsoft off track and could quite possibly completely ruin any chance they have of coming through on top, or through at all. Who is going to want to fork out another $600 or more on a console one, or two, years after they’ve just spent $200 on a peripheral for what would then be a last generation console? It would piss of many, many Microsoft supporters. Furthermore, Sony could just integrate a similar peripheral into the PlayStation 4 which would be the ultimate kick in the balls for Microsoft.
One could say that both Microsoft and Sony simply look foolish for entering the motion-sensed gaming realm, to say the least, by trying to tap into Nintendo’s market and insulting their fans with rip-off technology. Well, business is to technology precisely what technology is to business – the only problem is Nintendo managed to provide a motion-sensing gaming experience for an affordable price. Buying Microsoft’s Natal device, in a way, could be like buying a secondary console for your console. Even though Microsoft has officially announced that Project Natal is not a stand-alone console, if the price prediction is accurate, then it might as well be. For an extra $100 you could buy yourself a Nintendo Wii. Sony, on the other hand, are taking the safe route – no official launch info has been announced for the PlayStation motion sensing gadget – what we do know is that they are using the PSEye, which is cheap as chips, and a modified version of the PlayStation controller, which should work out to be a lot cheaper. For all we know Sony could postpone the release of their gadget until they launch the PlayStation 4, or just “can” it all together. What we saw at E3 was Sony showing us another clever way to utilize an already available, and affordable, peripheral – the PSEye.
Though Project Natal seems to be an impressive piece of technology introducing this late in the current console life cycle is a risk. Did Microsoft ever stop to think “what if it flops?” Natal seems to be an expensive project in regards to both software and hardware and the truth is hardcore gamers just don’t seem too interested in it – give them Gears of War 3 and they’ll be happy campers. The problem in this case is the demographic that Project Natal is aimed at – it may pique the interest of house mothers, and college boys who like to see girls shake their ass to WII Fit, all across the globe but those are the people who simply can’t afford, or can live without it.

Project Natal’s success is crucial to the survival of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and their future consoles, and they know that. A bad launch could have a devastating effect on the Xbox brand. What is not to suggest that this demographic already have the latest Nintendo console and don’t plan on buying another console, plus the peripheral.
No matter what, releasing Project Natal this generation is only going to mess things up for Microsoft. Is the next Xbox going to be Natal compatible? It wouldn’t work. People are not going to be able to afford it if is sold as a separate peripheral – we are in a world wide depression, people are struggling with buying common necessities. Microsoft should make Project Natal a feature of the next console – it is the smartest, and safest thing to do – but I guess, going back on their announcement now would only make them look like idiots. Then again Microsoft are used to shoving their feet in their mouths.

You can’t call the Wii a niche market anymore because of its success, but that definitely feels like Microsoft and Sony’s approach to motion controls..
They were never going to NOT rip off Niintendo, but it sounds like they’ve bumbled this as only Microsoft was doing well.
I can only think they believe this is going to “put them over the top”? But can anyone imagine this matching the success of Halo for them??
Great article, btw
Holy MOTHER F***ING SHIT, WHY IS EVERYONE CALLING EACH OTHER A DAM FANBOY!? I like Sony and Microsoft’s work equally, and I just wanted to make a legitimate, non-biased response to this post, check comment #17. Everyone here has to seriously shut the f*** up. And at least I have the respect to not post 1 billion freakin cuss words on a public website…jesus. In the end, Natal will have it’s pros and cons, everything does, but people like the lot of you here, “Xbots” and “PS3 Fanboys” <<<(for lack of a better word) are just gonna have to calm their s*** down because the technology isn't perfected yet and the community hasn't adapted yet. So just please let this be the end of it…and dear god if I hear one more smart-ass remark from a "fanboy" or user in general I'm going to hack and spam the shit of your dam e-mail! (It's not that hard to do once you've acquired an address, and on websites like this, its easier than one would think.)
Screw Microsoft PS3 Owns that shit hands down!
For all you faggot 360 fanboys, you know damn well you loved every second of PS2 and are fuckfaces for not buying a PS3 once your 5th piece of shit 360 broke down, All of you can suck off!
ps3 sux, HALO & GEARS FTW!!!!! more sales then any ps3 game out there right now n thats 4 a reason plus cod4 is so much better on 360 wen u can hear ppl, not like sonys ghost town psn with no mics, suxxxx, i got my micf4free, what if xbo is truly better the ps3 and wins this gen accept it records and legends r broken and triumphed by something greater!!!! ps cant be best 4ever
Okay, so a lot of people seem to have anger problems. It’s funny to see so many people get up-in-arms over someones personal opinion. Yes, the PS3’s expensive, but so is the X360 once you get it a version that comes with a hard drive and a wireless adapter. Plus, the PS3 still has bluray support, so when it’s all said and done (assuming the player wants to download stuff and play online w/o a wired connection) they’re really about the same price.
Personally, I think the natal camera’s kind of a dumb idea. I think that because i’ve never enjoyed playing eyetoy games (or any motion controlled games for that matter).
Go ahead and call me a Sony fanboy, and please get really pissed off by this post. After all, we’re only acting like civilized adults when we start trashing the opinions of others, right? Guessing that some of you will start insulting me for my “biased sony views” before reading the rest of this, I just thought I’d make sure you all know that I much prefer X360 to PS3.
Hey… PUT_YA_X’s_UP!… Xbox did certainly NOT win this generation’s console war, the Nintendo Wii did!!! But hey everyone… all three machines are cool and each of them offer something for everyone.
I have experienced format wars since the early 80’s with the ZX Spectrum and C64. Then came the AMIGA vs. Atari thing and the ongoing Mac vs. PC war… and it’s just getting worse all the time. If someone likes something or someone, why can’t people just accept it? Why do we have to have these MINDLESS discussions over what is best? You can have the coolest technology in a console, but if software developers don’t support it, it’s just a plastic container. A console has motion technology, it uses this and that chip and the graphics kick ass… SO WHAT??? If a person buys a console and is happy with it, then where is the problem?!
So people… accept that we all have differing tastes… that is what makes life so wonderful.
I really dont care on what console it is. I fckin hate motion control! I have motion sickness since the WII came out. It’s too casual and its just a big fckin gimmick. To hell with motion control!!
This is a terrible article, pure speculation on another speculation. No, people it isn’t news but the author never really claimed it was. However, he used an intriguing article name to get hits on an awfully written, purely opinionated speculation, thanks for making me never go to this site again. Sony fanboyism? I don’t think so, this has nothing to do with being a fanboy and everything to do with being a terrible journalist, this might as well have been written in your myspace blog, where no one reads it.
wow its incredible to see how many 10 year olds with computers there are.
well i guess the internet is world wide :D
This site has an uncharted 2 tab on its front page………..lolsony
Just a proof you don’t think much before writing:
“People are not going to be able to afford it if is sold as a separate peripheral – we are in a world wide depression, people are struggling with buying common necessities.”
When predicting the future, it would be advised to consider the present but not translate the present state to the future… Should companies stop every project in development because of the depression? They don’t have the money now so they never will again, huh? Very convincing…
I guess I could go on and on citing your post and pointing out everything that is either not accurate, wishful thinking or lazy thinking shortcuts but it wouldn’t worth the time it’d take to write them down…
As someone who tried and develop on the technology I would like to bring some facts to the table :
1) Natal WILL require some sort of calibration, not every living room is set up the same way.
2) Different games genre will have to use different calibration, this is a MAJOR problem as of now.
3) Natal detect 3D with IR. If there is ANYTHING that reflects in the room, like varnished floor, there is a huge potential that it WON’T WORK. ( or any reflective cloth.. remember those orange suits on that TV show ?? )
4) Granularity : Depth information is coded over 8 bits, which means 256 level of distance between you and the camera, which mean not very precise for fine detection. You think it can detect waggling yyour fingers when sitting on your sofa ? Think again.
5) Skeletal image analysis requires LOTS of computation power from the CPU and as of NOW is still hell’a buggy !
This obviously hit the x-bots hard, after all it’s the first article i came across which isn’t that optimistic about natal’s future. Puting aside all asumptions, natal is for the nintendo crowd and will most likely be expensive; as the same as all 360’s acsesories. However i don’t think this necesarely spells doom for the 360. I don’t think this article is biased neither. What i am certain of about all this, is that there are far too many fanboys here. ;) I just hope neither MS nor SONY screw up by chasing after Nintendo’s market.
@xikjkjn,
I have worked as editor for many, many years and I´ve noticed more grammatical errors in your post then in the author´s article. Despite your bias, this is a well written article. My only complaint is it seems little chopped up.
Furthermore, all these people bitching about this article being based on opinion and speculation really have to do more reading. IGN, Gameplayer, Gamespot, kotaku, and many other gaming sites give you nothing more than their opinion and speculation. It is common in both the gaming industry and journalism.
Why don´t we get back to topic: do you think Project Natal should be postponed?
As I´ve just then noticed more grammatical errors in my own post then the article. I´m tired. Leave me alone.

There we go – fixed it up. :)
Natal will flop, and Microsoft is turning into Nintendo
I have never read such a ridiculously immature article in my entire life. Everything you base your inconceivable rant on is drawn from thin air! How can you presume to “know” what people will pay for, economy notwithstanding, (let alone how much this item will cost) when you clearly haven’t even the slightest idea of how absolutely amazing people are finding Project Natal to be!? People CANNOT WAIT for Natal to come out, you perniciously presumptive imbecile! Word is it’ll only be 60-80 bucks as well – i.e. ONE game’s worth, and you think that’s going to kill Microsoft’s entire XBOX division??? Yeah RIGHT!!!
fuck Wii
I can’t wait for Natal, so how much does the PS eye and a contoller cost? I use my PS3 for Bluray the 360 is way better for games hands down
This proves Sony & MS are admitting defeat. They mocked the Wii and its motion controls now they’re jumping on the bandwagon. If you can’t beat em, copy em.
This is flawed logic.
Not the SOLE reason for the sales of the Wii, but a portion of it, is, the price tag. Adding peripherals to a console is only going to make it more expensive.
So, if you really think about it, they might be actually hurting themselves doing this.
If the peripherals are actually going to make the gameplay better, then just being a gimmick, then yes, it could help them out greatly.
Yes, it will.
