In the following list, I will attempt to bring together the best voices in videogames today. These are (voice) actors who pour their heart and soul into their characters, and who become living representation themselves of the roles they play. Their voices are so emblematic, that movies about them would just not be the same without their voices. So without further ado, here you have them: Top 5 Videogame Voice Actors.

#5: Armin Shimerman: Andrew Ryan (Bioshock) ***Spoilers***

Armin Shimerman

The voice of Armin Shimerman fits perfectly to the character of Andrew Ryan. The passion of Shimerman’s delivery is matched only by Andrew Ryan’s zealous love for the city of Rapture. Every time Ryan speaks to you, you listen. Regardless of what you are doing in the game, you listen, you just HAVE to. His voice captivates you because of the sheer ardor with which he delivers. Couple that with incredibly profound monologues and you have a character so rich, that it is becomes painful to kill him. And that scene… the scene when the man commands you to kill him is a scene so powerful that it continues to reverberate years after playing the game. He may be dead, but you are a slave, he chose to die, you did not have a choice but to kill him. Shimerman presents this episode flawlessly, starting out clam, poised, even though he knows he will die, and build up from there to utter rage and determination. Even when nearly clubbed to death, Ryan is draconian and commanding, making you feel like a mere pawn. I hope to continue hearing Mr. Shimerman in more projects, as he adds a layer of depth to his characters that undoubtedly resonate with gamers.

You can also hear Shimerman as:

  • Toad in X-Men Legends
  • Dr. Nefarious in Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal
  • Razputin’s father in Psychonauts.
  • Shimerman also lent his voice to Bioware for their games Jade Empire and Mass Effect.

Andrew Ryan

#4: Brian Cox: Scolar Visari (Killzone 1 and 2)

Brian Cox

You might know Mr. Cox from movies such as Troy (Agamemnon) and X2 (William Stryker) but the role that puts him in our list is of Autarch and would be emperor of Helghan: Scolar Visari. The intensity in Mr. Cox’s voice as he delivers his speech reflects the true and undying pride in his homeland and army. Watching the intro for both Killzone 1 and 2 always sends a tingle down my spine thanks to the inspiring words of Visari. He starts out passively in each speech, as if addressing the troops directly and personally, but he steadily climbs in excitement and ardor, culminating in a tone so inspiring, you feel like joining the Helghast and hunting some ISA dogs! “Defenders of the Helghast dream NOW IS OUR TIME!!”

You can also hear Cox as:

  • Lionel Starkweather the Director in Manhunt

Scolar Visari

#3: Steve Downes: Master Chief (Halo 1-3)

Steve Downes

Granted, Master Chief isn’t the most talkative of characters, and his dialogues are not nearly as deep as the previous two, but damn is his voice cool. It helps that Steve Downes works at a radio station, because the extremely low tone necessary to voice Master Chief requires nothing less than a master of his craft. It may also help that he is a smoker (Neither PinchoVe or NextGN endorse smoking kids), because the tones this guy reaches only escape us mortals when we’ve just woken up with a really bad hangover. Had Master Chief been a more talkative character, he would’ve made our second spot in the list.

You can also hear Downes as:

  • Gunnar in Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator

Master Chief

#2: Nolan North: Nathan Drake (Uncharted 1 and 2)

Nolan North

Nolan North is a guy who loves his job. He’s a veteran to the industry, having voiced characters from blockbusters such as Gears of War 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4, as well as the Prince in Prince of Persia. But it is thanks to Nathan Drake that Nolan North gets the runner up spot on the list. It’s weird, because the first impression you get from Nathan (at least the one I got) is that he was just a typical, superficial, cocky wiseass. This can’t be farther away from the truth because as it turns out, Nathan is an incredibly likeable guy; the type of dude you’d want to be friends and have a beer with. You root for him because he’s sincere, cool, and funny, and he seems like an ordinary guy caught in extraordinary situations. The Prince also surfaces as a great example of his work, he may be a bit cocky, but his witty remarks never dry up, and his conversations with Elika are funny and believable. Nolan brings a ton of his own personality and humor to his characters, and makes his characters his own. You can see Nathan in Nolan, as well as Nolan in Nathan, and if there is ever a chance of an Uncharted movie, I wouldn’t want anyone but Nolan North as the protagonist.

You can also hear North as (o.k., the man has a huge list of games he’s done voices for… these are only a few):

  • Desmond Miles in Assassin’s Creed
  • Male Hero in Fable 2
  • Jace Stratton in Gears of War 2
  • Hades, Greek Soldier, Fisherman in God of War
  • Sgt. Forge in Halo Wars
  • Ghost Rider, Deadpool, Hawkeye in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
  • The Prince in the latest Prince of Persia
  • Raphael in TMNT games

Nathan Drake

#1: David Hayter: Snake (Metal Gear Solid Series)

David Hayter[1]

Alas, we come to the number one spot. Did you call it? You probably did because when it comes to cool, memorable, and characteristic voices, no one tops Mr. David Hayter aka Snake. From the beginning of the series, Hayter has breathed life into Snake, making him the badass we have come to know and love. But truly, the crown jewel of his performance has to be Old Snake in MGS4. A battered man, coming to grips with his age and mortality, each monologue depicts a grizzled veteran aching to retire, but straining himself to the extremes to answer the call of duty. Each grunt, sigh, and groan of affliction that Snake utters weighs us down, as he makes us feel what he is going through. Interestingly enough, Hayter is the writer of the first X-men movie and co-writer for the second. He also co-wrote Watchman (the movie) and The Scorpion King.

Metal Gear Solid Old Snake

Honorable Mention: Kiefer Sutherland: Sgt. Roebuck (Call of Duty: World at War)

Kiefer Sutherland

A new and welcome addition to the gaming industry, Mr. Sutherland proves that the boundaries between gaming and film are getting harder to differentiate as time goes on. Kieffer Sutherland brings Jack Bauer’s voice to Sgt. Roebuck, and every time he barks an order at you, you listen and follow the order, because lets face it, what Jack Bauer wants, Jack Bauer gets. It’s probably a matter of time until more and more movie actors follows Kieffer’s example and voice our favorite characters in our favorite games. Expect Christian Bale to appear in ¾ of the games in 2 years.

Games have become more complex as time goes by, and gamers have come to expect near perfection in every aspect, and voice acting is no exception. Tell us what you think – who are your favorite voice actors? Who did we miss?

how is TC Carson not number 1 let alone even on the list?, his voice acting in god of war is phenomenal, halo shouldn’t even be in the list

  2. jonathan says:

why you don’t list TC Carson is beyond me, he should be tied in number 1, his voice acting in god of war is phenomenal

  3. Itachi says:

Steven Blum should be on this list. He’s been in over 120 games and over 70 anime. And thats not all. look him up on Wiki and i bet you’ll change your list.

  4. tom says:

awesome nice list here is some of my favorite voice actors

Paul Mercier re4: Leon S. Kennedy

    Terrence C. Carson: Kratos

Tara Strong: FINAL FANTASY X Rikku

Ken Lally as Albert Wesker in RE5

    Paul Eiding: Roy Campbell

    Patric Zimmerman: Liquid Ocelot

    Michael Hollick: Niko Bellic

yuri lowenthal: the prince in the prince of persia trilogy

  5. Robert Lee says:

One of my favorite videogame voice actors is Mike Pollock: Dr Robotnik aka Dr Eggman in the all the recent Sonic the Hedgehog games, he put heart and soul into doing that character as he was the voice of Dr Eggman in the Sonic X anime show.

  6. Sark_Amen says:

Well, I do agree that these are some of the better voice actors in recent years. However, I think these guys are my top dramatic or otherwise voice actors.

Steven Russell (Garrett from the Thief series)
Michael Bell (Soul Reaver’s Raziel, and don’t forget the smurfs!)
Simon Templeman (The voice of Kain from Legacy of Kain)
Reuben Langdon ( I mean come on! This guys is Devil May Cry’s Dante in real life!)
Paul Mercier is my honorable mention because he carried resident evil 4 for me, without him Leon could have just fell flat.

All of these being Eidos related projects but it’s sad to me to see that these guys aren’t in lead roles for some of these higher budget titles.

  7. Sark_Amen says:

er I screwed up that last statement “Eidos and Capcom”

  8. Reaper187 says:

as much as a i love halo, seriously Why master chief he doesn’t even talk much you rarely hear his voice and its not that special its definitely no where near as the others

you could have had i don’t know maybe

Takeshi Kaneshiro Samanosuke Akechi from onimusha imo he did awesome voice acting and he’s a real actor…

  9. Jacob says:

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    WHERE’S MICHAEL IRONSIDE ?

YOU KNOW, THE GUY THAT DOES SAM FISHER IN SPLINTER CELL

HIS VOICE IS THE BEST VOICE FOR SAM, NOBODY ELSE CAN DO THAT.

MICHAEL IRONSIDE has to be in that list I tell you

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. cell989 says:

AAAHhh yes Snake, thats the only voice that truly fits the character at hand. Snake is what makes Metal Gear bad ass. The voice it self is the depiction of how a bad ass character should sound, nothing like Sam Fisher, who sounds like a noob fresh out of the academy.

  11. fisheye says:

Where is Simon Templeman? As Kain in Legacy of Kain.
Kain is the most dramatic character in videogames history……….a true antihero!

  12. Fail says:

I know this it says Actors but seriously? Those voice actors are pretty fail to me. Jennifer Hale should be up there. And like the first person said, TC Carson… how can you leave his voice acting out?

  13. cyborgJ says:

I THINK PAUL MERCIER SHOULD DO THE VOICE OVER FOR RAIDEN IN THE NEXT METAL GEAR NOT Quinton Flynn HIS VOICE DOESN’T SUIT THE CHARACTER PLUS I HATE HIS VOICE !!!!!!!!!

  14. xino says:

what a sh* and biased list!

    No Heavenly Sword actors there!????
All the actors in the game were great!

by the way, that Steve Downes is sick:)

  15. Will says:

If you didnt list mgs4 as # 1 after listing Master chief as #3 when he doesnt even talk, I would have started to doubt your integretiy nad decisions completely. I watched my older brother play mgs 1 when I was around 8 or 9 i forgot. I never played a mgs game until 4 came out and i burrowed it lol. And holy shit this man is truly the best video game voice actor ever. Well thats probably because the game was as perfect as ocarina of time. Good choice on Visari’s voice actor. Man when i played that game and he was giving me that speech I was hung on every word. Perfect speech. When i read your comment saying it was “so” inspiring, I heard the speech go through my head. The guy who voice act’s Nathan Drake sorta looks like him lol. I would put the guy who does the tutorials in little big planet over master chief anyday.

  16. jonnie says:

Yeah the shakespearian voice acting of the characters in Soul Reaver LOK should be mentioned, plus the voice of Agent 47.

  17. Victus says:

No Simon Templemann, no care. That’s a HUGE omission from this list. In fact, the entire cast of the LoK: Soul Reaver series could fill this list.

  18. Zaka says:

Ypu without simon this list fails, the VAs of LoK actually made me realized the potential of VAs

  19. D.O. says:

To be honest the lack of TC Carson is really quite irritating, if you watched the “Fear Nothing” Trailer of God of War III listen when he says “I fear nothing” and “I hope for nothing”, he showed in that trailer that Kratos isn’t all rage, the trailer showed the emptiness in his character.

Why you added someone with hardly any lines (Steve Downes) over TC Carson and a bunch of other great voice actors escapes me.

Seriously though I think you should have also added Phil Lamarr the man shows his versatility when it comes to videogames he voiced Vamp in MGS4, the brutal voodoo using machete wielding Mr Sunshine from Saints Row 2, and just to show his versatility I’ll use these examples he can voice an authoritative adult (Green Lantern, John from inFAMOUS) to young teenagers (Static Shock)

I know a few more VA’s but Phil and TC were the first ones that came to my head

  20. Mark says:

Perosonally i liked Ray Liotta in Grand theft auto Vice city. That was my favorite voice actor of all time them, probably Paul Mercier in RE 4.

  21. lony says:

    I loved the article!
I agree with most of you choices but i have my own favorites too:
michael ironside A.K.A SAM FISHER was great, (I loved him in “STARSHIP TROOPERS”)
I would have to agree with the guy that mentioned the GTA series, RAY LIOTA (Tommy Vercetti), MICHAEL RAPAPORT (Joey Leone), SAMUEL L JACKSON (Officer Frank Tenpenny)…
Come to think about it, I think the best voice over in a game with the best list of actors would have to be -
    “GTA – VICE CITY”
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314123/
    hands down!

  22. 5head says:

I’m surprised none of the voice actors from Mass Effect are mentioned:

Keith David: The Thing, Crash, There’s Something About Mary, Platoon
Lance Henriksen: Aliens, Alien vs. Predator, Red Faction 2
Seth Green: (i’m sure you can think of a few titles on your own)
