god-of-war-iii-15

We´ve all seen the E3 2009 footage of God of War III  and you´d be a nut-case to say you were unimpressed. Everything about this game screams success; the graphics, audio, the intense action, but there is still one question that remains unanswered. Although it is widely speculated, no official sources have actually confirmed that the game is rendered at 1080p. After all, Sony did promise us native 1080p@60FPS gaming from launch, but we are still waiting. Several sites have listed God of War III to be among one of the few titles that is in fact 1080p native. Will be interesting to see whether or not there is any truth to this, considering that a vast majority of 1080p games are arcade ones. No game of this caliber has been rendered at a resolution higher than 720p on console previously.

Digital Foundry took these rumours aboard and did an analysis of the PSN trailer to draw the conclusion that God of War III is rendered at 720p and features 2xMSAA, which is superb for this generation gaming. On the contrary, many sites, including wikipedia, are still claiming that GoW3 will be 1080p native.

Hopefully Sony will shed some light on this topic soon and debates can be put to rest.

  2. mike Said,

1080p isnt happening on this gen of consoles for major releases. Just as well, Id rather have a 720p game with more enemies and stuff going on the screen than a 1080p one with less. It’s nice to see them use 2xMSAA, wish more games had it.

  3. RomeoHotel Said,

Keep in mind the PS3 RSX technolgy is 3+ years old. It’s an unfortunate truth that the GPU simply CAN NOT handle 1920×1080@60FPS, it’s just not capable. I wish Sony would have chosen a more capable GPU option to end these stupid X360 vs. PS3 debates. nVidia produced a lemon in my opinion and it would be in Sony’s best interest to have AMD/ATI take a crack at this. If Sony could evolve the PS3 using say an ATI 5800 series or even a 4800 series chip I have NO DOUBT it could handle anything thrown at it. The RSX is constantly compared to the 7800 nVidia series which is an absolute DOG now. You can’t run much of anything in today’s gaming market on a an nVidia 7800 PC Graphic’s Card. We’re stuck with the RSX and it’s a limitation shame! Sony!!! Please just admit the shortcomings for once, we’re not idiots.

  4. RomeoHotel Said,

PS: I just downloaded GOW3 from an E3 Promo and what’s the first thing I noticed, 720P! Sony, stop leading people on with 1080P trailers of a game that will play @ 720P. FALSE ADVERTISING. Now…Mike is correct, the game looks absolutely stunning at 1280×720 with 2xMSAA, I’m just disappointed that WE the consumer have been mislead by the industry’s definition of HD Gaming. If you want TRUE HD Gaming you need to buy a 40″ LED TV @ 240Hz and hook it up to your $3000 Gaming Rig. I’ve played COD4 at 1920×1080 on the PC and the PS3 can not hold a candle to it. The RSX is J U N K!

  5. Eight Ball Said,

Romeo, it’s an E3 promo demo, the code isn’t final, it’s about 6 months old, what do you expect.

Also, in regards to your first post, the PS3 when developed for uses the SPU’s for a large chunk of GPU work, so the somewhat underpowered GPU argument has no standing for a PS3 exclusive.

  6. RabidFace Said,

    @RomeoHotel

The RSX chip is fully capable of doing 1920×1080 at 60FPS (though, it’s the whole console that is able to do it, not just the GPU), especially since it has an EXTREMELY fast bandwidth to the CPU, where it can offload some of the GPU calculations. Have you actually done any research on the subject, or just pulling it out of your arse?

A few games off the top of my head that are 1080p native are GT5:P, Wipeout HD (plus the Pure expansion), Tekken 5: DR, High Velocity Bowling, NBA 08(not live), and a few others. Yes, most of the 1080p native games for the PS3 are racing, fighting, or games that don’t have HUGE worlds, but the fact still remains, there are 1080p 60FPS games for the PS3.

You forget to think that the PS3 is still hard to code for at the moment, and mainly all of the 1080p native games are exclusive to the PS3. Remember the PS2 at all? Not till about 5 years after it’s release, were games finally using almost the full potential of the system. Gran Turismo 4 looked a lot better than GT3.

You also fail to realize that a console runs a little bit different than a PC. Would you believe me that the PS2 only ran at 294Mhz? That’s right. Go look at some GT4 screenshots, and tell me what you think.

It is fully possible that GoW 3 will run at 1080p 60FPS. I also hope that the 1080p screens of GoW 3 not false advertising. But maybe, just maybe, developers have found some “magic” code that is able to utilize a lot more of the PS3s power. Here is a link to 1080p GoW screenshots.

This is a great year for gaming, and glad I own a PS3.
