One of the most popular genre’s at the moment must be the Tower Defense genre, Especially on the PlayStation Network, First Pixeljunk, then Savage Moon, Now Comet Crash. This title is developed by Pelfast, One thing that this title has that the others don’t is the ability to take the fight to the enemy.
Comet Crash is a basic real time tower defense game with a twist. You choose among a variety of weapons and towers to defend your area while building more towers in order to destroy the enemies area and collect yellow points which will allow you to build more. The units are made in a good vs bad scale – if they are fast they are also weak, if they are slow they are also strong. While you progress throughout the stages the difficulty will get harder and the enemies will become smarter and will spawn faster.
Each level has a way-around to complete it faster, whether it involves destroying the enemies gateway and replacing it with yours or taking out the tanks and defending the lasers, Comet Crash incorporates a hint for every level. This makes it easier to complete the level without running around in circles. All that is needed to be done is to place a factory and thousands of scouts will spawn. These little critters move at a fast speed but their number will be cut down by two thirds by the time they will get to the enemies base since they are weak. Factories can also be upgraded, producing better units like tanks. The player’s units will not attack unless they are being told and will stay in the base, multiplying by the hundreds, until the order to attack is given.
Your armies will follow the most logical path – short and easy – and your enemies will do the same. Comet Crash allows the player to block all open paths with on-way gates, allowing only friendly units through the blocked area (or if the enemy places one, enemy unites can only go through it) until it’s destroyed. The only source of income are the yellow tokens that are left after a floating asteroid is being destroyed.
The controls are simple (as in most Tower Defense games) – fly your ship around the screen, choose a building and place it with the X button. The repair and upgrade options are also here. The controls are very smooth and make the game a whole lot easier and fun.
Strengths:
Comet Crash is pretty straight forward, it has a strong hint system, that will help when needed. The controls are smooth and make things easier when you are in a tight spot. The game has a lot of levels to explore – a good thing taking into account the length of some of the PSN games out now.
Weaknesses:
The visuals on Comet Crash are not good and make the game look and feel like a indie game (which is a plus for some people). The sound can also be improved.
Overall:
Comet Crash has a lot of levels to keep you busy and the trophy support is always a plus. The game has a similar feel to the other Tower Defense games, besides the fact that you can take the fight to the enemy. I wish the flood of Tower Defense games would stop for a while. Comet Crash is not a bad game, but it also not the best out there.
Score: 79
