I got my hands on one of the beta tokens for one of the most wanted betas out there - Call of duty: World at War beta.
The beta includes about 5 multiplayer modes and 4 maps and the players can’t pass level 11.
Call of duty 4 is still one of the best multiplayer games out there and why change something that works? Treyarch kept the same concept in multiplayer mode but gave it a unique WW2 touch. Some of the perks names were changed and there are different weapons. You can now return to your beloved MP40 or Thompson gun and forget about the M16 or the Ak47.
The beta shows off some very unique variety of grenades. You have the common explosive grenade, the smoke grenade and three other grenades that are unique to WW2. The first one is a flare grenade that will make everyone in it’s area blind for a period of about 10 seconds. The second one is a replacement for the stun grenade – it’s explosion causes for some blurry sight a limited movement. The third grenade is poison gas. The gas will cause injuries, blurred sight and very limited movement. Much like the stun grenade but better.
The helicopter that you could summon after you got 7 kills in a row is gone and being replaced by a pack of dogs that will chase the other team and try to kill them.
One of the nicest things in World at War is the tanks. In one of the game modes every team is given a tank. The tanks are a very nice addition to the Call of Duty franchise but they are being used in a very bad way. Reloading takes forever, they are very vulnerable (tanks can be taken out by two bazookas), and its movement is very heavy and almost impossible maneuver. Sure, it’s realistic, but it’s not fun…
The graphics are better than Call of Duty 4. The game looks sharper and the shadows looks better and darker. The big problem with the graphics is how the ground looks. There are places where the ground looks like in Counter Strike – very ugly. On the other hand, on some maps, like the jungle maps – where you walk in water, it looks magnificent.
Call of Duty: World at War is going in the right direction in the path of becoming a decent sequel to Call of Duty 4. There are several minor bugs and glitches that I’m sure will be fixed by the retail version will be out.

[...] Call of Duty: World at War is taking us back in time and returns to the battle fields of World War 2. This time around the game focuses on the battles between American and the Japanese armies. For the first time in the Call of Duty franchise the player will face one of the most furious and unique enemies the Americans had to face during WW2. The Japanese aren’t the only the Americans will face – the Americans will also battle the Russians for Berlin. The Japanese army fights differently than other armies we’ve already seen in Call of Duty. They will be sneakier, smarter and will use the jungle as disguise. Call of Duty: World at War supports a four player co-op mode both offline and online and of course the famous Call of Duty multiplayer modes that also here.
