We all heard the recent rumors about how Home will be released bundled with Firmware 2.5 for the Playstation 3.
Here are 11 things we are probably NOT going to get on the next firmware update, but I would sure love to get…
1. Background Copying/Installing/Downloading
The computer I have at home is not very new. Not at all… Actually, I bought about three years ago.
But guess what – I can do other things while I copying files, installing games or downloading!
It really bugs me that I can’t do anything on my PS3 while I’m transferring files over Wi-Fi, my USB drive or installing a game.
Oh yeah, and can someone please explain why I can’t download themes in the background?!
Come on… The PS3 is a powerful machine (that’s what they keep telling us…)… Why can’t I hear the new Metallica CD while I copy another Avatar episode?
2. MKV, SRT, SUB Support
The PS3 is being heavily marketed as a full scale multimedia machine for your living room – that’s why we are able to copy divx files and watch them on the TV.
If Sony really wants us to take it seriously, please allow us to watch MKV files. I’m sick and tired of converting them back to MPEG files!
And if we are already on the subject, Sony, please add the feature that every 50$ DVD player has – support subtitles in SRT and SUB format!
Would also be really great to have support for languages other than English…
3. Video Store Open for Everyone
Currently, each PS3 user can access the American Playstation Store, European Playstation Store and Japanese Playstation Store… But not the video store… Only people who actually live in the U.S… Why keep us out of the Playstation Video Store based on our IP? Give us access Sony! Base your block policy like you do with the regular store – by address.
4. Screen Capture Feature
Rumors on this feature are circling around the web for over a month now.
Let’s just hope it turns out to be true – would make my life a lot easier with this website…
5. Surf the Web While I’m In a Game
Another nice feature to have is the ability to use the web browser while you are in a game.
We already have in games XMB, but we can’t really access the web browser without quitting the game completely.
It can actually be quite helpful when you’re looking for a quick hint after being stuck in a game.
6. Ability to Create Folders
The vertical files list can get pretty long if you have enough space on the hard drive.
It would be really nice to be able to create folders and arranging all the movie and audio files on my PS3.
The ability to delete files from the Media Server would also be nice, but I don’t really think it’s even possible.
7. Background Folding@Home
Folding@Home for PS3 was released at the end of March 2007.
Folding@home is the most powerful distributed computing cluster in the world, according to Guinness, and one of the world’s largest distributed computing projects. The goal of the project is “to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases (Wikipedia baby!).
Can someone please explain why can’t this ALWAYS run in the background?
Again, back to my old computer – If it can run Folding@Home while I do other things, no reason my monster game machine can’t…
8. Ability to Invite Friends for Online Gaming
I believe this is one of the most requested features by PS3 users (if not the most requested one by now…).
I would really love the option to invite someone from my friends list for some online fun.
Actually, when I think of this, we might even get this one with the release of Home. Hemmm….
9. More Countries in Life With Playstation
The closest city in Life with Playstation to where I live is in a different country…
I don’t understand what is the problem (especially if they are using Google News as a news source) to have at least one city in every country around the world.
The funny thing is that the developer on the Life with Playstation video walkthrough Sony released is an Israeli, and Israel is not on the Life with Playstation globe.
10. Faster Trophies Servers
When I’m trying to watch my trophies list, my friend’s trophies list or just trying to compare trophies, I can die of old age until I actually see something on the screen… I know a lot of people don’t care for trophies. I don’t either but it is a nice feature to have. But with the slow trophies servers, it comes to the point where I just don’t care about them… Too much waiting time…
And 11. Why do we need the View All
This is something I really don’t understand.
When I connect my USB disk-on-key to the PS3 the video files have to be in a “VIDEO” folder for them to be visible to be… Unless, I click the triangle button and choose “View All”…
Do we really need this extra step?
That’s it, my list of 11 things I really wish to get on the next firmware upgrade…
Should be out next month with the release of Home and Little Big Planet.
My guess is that we will only get the screen capture feature.
Some of the features on this list will arrive eventually, even if it will take some time.
But most of them will probably never be seen on PS3…

You can make folders for videos….it is really slow process though….you have to check the properties of a video and where it says folder you give it a name, for example “movies”, and if you do the same with all the movies on your hdd, they will all be on the same folder…..slow but effective…
You have a point in some of the things you said but some things are just ridiculous…
For example,
“Folding@home is a distributed computing project designed to perform computationally intensive simulations” Wikipedia
COMPUTATIONALLY INTENSIVE SIMULATIONS and all the data is transferred back to the main server.
So, it uses up all your CPU and your network connection.
Why the fuck would you want it to work in the background?
You can arrange stuff in folders already. Press triangle on a file, go to information, and type in a name for “Album.” Put the same name on other files albums, and they will be arranged in a folder under that title.
surf the web while in a game is my fav ! i have been wanting that forever now!
juan pablo, SPECTRUX – Actually I didn’t know that I can create folders. But what about sub-folders – that I can’t do…
And they can make the process of making a folder easier…
another someone, Folding@Home is performing computationally intensive simulations by dividing all the tasks needed to be done. It’s not that your PS3 is doing all the work by itself.
Try downloading Folding@Home to your PC and you can see it’s working in the background.
ddog – yeah – would be a great addition :)
i like the “view all” feature because on my portable hard drive i have alot of video’s very organised for eg video – shows – supernatural
through the normal method i can only get as far as the shows folder and i cant veiw my video but with view all i can because with out it i will have to many files in one folder and that would piss me off
